Fraser Valley City Maps Book

Vancouver is just a start
The city of Vancouver is a great place, but you will quickly find out that there is a lot more to explore outside of the city. And if you want to do that exploration, I strongly recommend this map book. It has accurate and detailed maps of most of the outlying communities. Use it and even the most "directionally-challenged" of us will not get lost.

I first got the Vancouver City Maps book (which I also recommend) and then quickly discovered the value of getting this second one. The really nice part is that at this price you can afford to buy both.

Good Advice . . .
I come back to this book again and again. I've owned it for several years. Every time I need a dose of perspective and reality about relationships, it always provides. It's tone is light, it's very well written and presented, but the content is right-on. It is like turning to a wise friend who won't hold back the truth.

French Fashion Plates of the Romantic Era in Full Color: 120 Plates from the "Petit Courrier Des Dames," 1830-34
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1991)
Author: Judy M. Johnson

Wonderful Resource!
This book is a great resource for the re-enactor or costumer. It can be considered primary documentation, as it is directly reprinted from the original. There's a very handy glossary in the front, in case you are not already familiar with mousselain-de-soie. I wish I could make every dress in the book--it's so hard to choose only one of these delightful gowns!

French Resistance
Published in Paperback by Cassell Academic ()
Author: Michael Johnson
Average review score:

An American in Paris - old genre, great new treatment
Throw away Peter Mayle's "Year in Provence." Don't bother with Polly Platt's "French or Foe." Michael Johnson's "French Resistance" is the best book ever done in American-in-Paris genre. It is a wildly funny and engaging book that should appeal to francophiles and francophobes alike (as well as others who share some of both traits). It recounts Johnson's misadventures as the American managing editor of a French magazine staffed by French men and, more particularly, women, who don't want an American boss (or any boss at all). Apart from deftness of the writing, the book's humor and charm comes from the terrific perspective that Johnson has in telling his story. Not only is he perfectly fluent in speaking French, he has lived in Paris for many years as an American foreign correspondent, married to a French woman with two daughters, raised as French. For all that, when it comes to managing the French, Johnson discovers the true depths of French Resistance to all things American.

A French Song Companion
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (September, 1900)
Authors: Graham Johnson and Richard Stokes
Average review score:

Worthy companion to Bernac
Pierre Bernac's _Interpretation of French Song_ has long been the indispensable reference volume for singers and coaches of this rich musical literature. The focus of the present volume is somewhat different, more comprehensive in its listings of composers (any composer of significance who set French texts is included, resulting in some surprising listings, Bernstein and Dinu Lipatti, for example), but less didactic in terms of pronounciation and performance. The translations by Richard Stokes are so good that one wishes even more had been included. Graham Johnson's commentaries on composers and songs are readable and full of insight. There are useful indices and suggestions for further reading. Altogether, this is a comprehensive and fascinating volume for both performing musicians and other lovers of French art song.

Friends of God and Prophets: A Feminist Theological Reading of the Communion of Saints
Published in Hardcover by Continuum Pub Group (June, 1998)
Author: Elizabeth A. Johnson
Average review score:

Will Deepen your understanding of Saints & the Holy Spirit
If you are a person into change, into contemplating your own place in the world, into deepening your personal spiritual connection to all that is, and especially to G-d, you will love this book. Yes, it deals with feminist theology, yes, 'Sr. Beth' is an excellent, careful, and clear writer -- these are obvious with a cursory glance. We all fit together, somehow, in this world of G-d's, and hardly a paragraph goes by where the reader is not encouraged to feel & believe in both the connection & the process. This work is a synthesis of very much, a disparager of very little, an emblem of hope & belief... a way... for how we are all part of the communion of saints, keepers of Wisdom, able ourselves to -be- 'friends of God, and prophets' -- and ultimately able to believe in and offer support to each other. It is simply one of the best books I have ever read.

This is not to say it's an easy read -- it is not. It is FULL of stuff, no wasted words. But, if you are a seeker of the Holy Spirit, you will be encouraged & nurtured -- and maybe, challenged.

From Kansas to Cannibals: The Story of Osa Johnson (Avisson Young Adult Series)
Published in Paperback by Avisson Pr Inc (December, 2001)
Author: Suzanne Middendorf Arruda
Average review score:

The New Woman of the Twentieth Century
Osa Johnson WAS the new woman of the twentieth century. She did not stay home and tend to her husband and raise kids. She tended to her husband while enjoying the adventure he pursued. The twentieth century was a time of change for women in America. This book is a wonderful way of introducing young people to the changes made by this woman for other women of her time. In fact, I think adults would also enjoy reading this as much as I did. It sparked an interest that continues to grow.
